Garter belts have existed since medieval times. They were worn around the waist with attached garters to support the woman’s stockings to hold them up. That was their main and only function. Early garters were made by leather and heavy cloths. Women, who wore underwear to form and slim figure, wore garter belts and, actually, more preferred the girdle, which was more supportive and better formed the figure. This was in addition to better holding up the stockings. Garter belts were very popular in the middle of 20th century, as more lighter and comfortable versions of the girdle.
